On one of my many trips into Canyon de Chelly, we took the north fork. After painting the 12x16 study titled North Fork, I decide to paint this one focused on the cliff on the left side of that scene. I just fell in love with the large red cliff on the front left; it’s foot, anchoring into the sage scattered floor. I viewed it as the “grandad” of the opening to that canyon entrance; an approachable gateway welcoming visitors. I never get tiered of these massive structures; their rock aprons, rounded and weathered over the centuries, decorated by the occasional pinion pine and scrub that slant gracefully to the ground, rooting the incalculable weight of the rock. Juxtaposed is the near vertical rise of the craggy cliff face and topped off by the flat top of the mesa. Not much else could say SOUTWEST LANDSCAPE more than the cliffs of Canyon de Chelly. This painting revels in the fact that the warm light of the Navajo Sun turns the red oxide cliffs almost orange and the relatively cool shadows, filled in by the blue sky infusing itself into them, appear almost red violet. Counterpunch that by the clear crisp white of the cloud; and it is a sight to behold The winding dirt passage frequented by wild horses compelled me onward to further exploration of this colorful and ancient lands. The atmosphere was clear and the sky blue with white clouds floating on gentle air currents. giving no hint of what was coming the next day. For now, all was quiet we had the day. But be warned never to expect good old mother nature to behave for your benefit. We woke up to a wild wind and dust storm that lasted for two days and obliterate this particular view along with all the others. Enjoy the day, we know not what tomorrow will bring.
