Spider Rock is a spire of solid rock climbing 800 or so feet into the air from the canyon floor. I have been below in the canyon several times, however, this time, I sat on the edge of the cliff overlooking this grand vista. I was facing WNW as the sun continued its journey to the western horizon. As it descends in the sky the colors richen. An already breath-taking view begins to intensify in color. The beautiful, becomes exaggerated. The cliff faces light up and the afternoon shadows are moving their way across the valley, erasing the warmth of the sun with their cool colors. The river below seems to defy this, as it winds its way down the sun-soaked canyon into the shadow’s realm. Paradoxically, the river takes with it the reflected light of the cliffs colors and gracefully redirects it up to us. Creating a river of gold.
