This diptych was painting for a specific spot as a commission, on either side of a window; and the two spots they were to hang were really narrow. It presented some exciting challenges as all commissions do. We are used to reading from left to right, therefor we are strongly inclined to want to “read” a painting from left to right also. For a tall skinny vertical, one must be prepared to move the viewers eye up and down, instead of side to side. These two had the added challenge of having a window space between them (usually diptychs are hung with an inch or two between them). These painting can be read across the space, in other words, the two paintings read as one, and have unity between them. These two would have to be able to be “read” if they were ever hung next to each other AND with the space of the window between them. I had just returned from teaching a class in Italy with a busload of artists from the USA when I was asked to do this diptych. I felt lucky I had had the opportunity to do that before I received this commission. We drove through the countryside for hours and hours in the weeks we were there. What a beautiful place. What I can tell you for sure is that it stirred the soul, looking like it had been there for centuries in just about this way. Occasionally we would stumble upon a ruin of sorts and even that would add to the rich historic and timeless effect of the place. Many poems, songs and paintings have been created to share and remind this place with others and there will be many more to come in the future. I am glad I got to have a go at it.
