There are not too many scenes like this left in downtown Laguna Beach on Ocean drive, right around the corner from gallery we had paintings in, right next door and across the street from fancy little shops. I painted this from life during the plein air festival event that Jennifer was in. I never missed that opportunity to go paint with her because we had so few chances while she lived in Oregon and we were in the Phoenix area. She was looking up the sidewalk toward where the festival of arts is and I looked into this short little row of “old Laguna”. If you drove past it, you would probably drive right past it and never notice it. It is only six or so little house long and mostly blocked by fences. I know they don’t look exactly like this as my imagination took over and painted it the way I wanted to remember it. I loved the juxtaposed shapes of the little sheds and rooftops. The color of the shops were maybe enhanced for effect but mother nature sent in just the right king of clouds for my vintage view. I was so imagining what could have been going on in the open door with a tiny light hanging from the ceiling. I think it is just the kind of place we all would have wanted to grow up living and exploring.
