There is a certain frustration in trying to be able to convey the great masses of these big bad boys in Canyon de Chelly. You have one gigantic rock cliff next to an enormous one, nest to a behemoth. How can the viewer ever tell how big they really are when they are ALL that huge? If it was my main objective in Among Giants, to communicate the size of these forms to human scale I had to use all the tools in my toolbox. Color can create great depth going IN to a painting, the third dimension. A little sleight of hand it may be but essential to the overall idea. These things MUST BE massive if there is that much atmosphere in just a couple cliff faces deep. it was certainly handy however, when down the way a few wild horses showed up to graze like they didn’t have a care in the world. What they will never know is they had solved my dilemma! No more “horsing around”, I could just put in a few horses! Everyone knows how big a horse is and that informs them to the size of the canyon walls! Some people say I got lucky that day, but I choose to think I just live right! I love the strength and beauty of this place. Time stands still, the present, the past, they merge or maybe they just don't matter when your here.
